This beautiful film about Brussels and its inhabitants, by anthropologist and documentary filmmaker Laura Taubman, is an artistic and poetic interpretation of the Wetopia project “This is Us. This is Brussels.” 17.43 min FR/NL/ENG subtitles in ENG
“I am a filmmaker and anthropologist. I use documentary filmmaking as a means of reaching out to others and inviting us, within an empathetic space, to question and re-evaluate our own perceptions.
My career as a filmmaker has led me to deal with subjects as diverse as self-managed education, illness, disability, systemic discrimination and art, particularly dance, as a means of action, struggle and resilience. Through my work, I seek to give a voice to minority or even invisible populations.
My films are at once a cry, a quest, a laugh and an invitation to take a moment to slow down and contemplate the poetry that lies hidden in every social space and in every individual.”
“This is Us. This is Brussels.” is building a ‘human archive’ by 2030. We do this by collecting the stories of 1,000 Brussels residents to uncover the Brussels and its inhabitants of the 2020s: a super-diverse, young, multi-layered and complex city at the heart of Europe. We then use these stories to create more and discover new ‘us’.
This is Us. This is Brussels. is a Wetopia project in collaboration with Molenbeek for Brussels 2030 and BNA BBOT, with the support of Urban Brussels.
