Power of Place: Tétouan

One of the pillars of our Wetopia work is delving into the power of a place to discover its potential and, based on that potential, setting up strong projects with the people for whom the place forms part of their daily lives: those who live and work there, who are drawn to it or who pass through. This always starts with building local teams and conducting field research, sensitive mapping, collecting stories and visualising them. Above all, it is about bringing people together, observing and listening closely, and learning a great deal from one another.

In May 2026 we started immersing ourselves in Tétouan to uncover the essence and patterns that make this remarkable city in northern Morocco so unique. Thanks to the inspiring voices of inhabitants and local students and professionals, we started exploring the Power of Place of Tétouan through conversations, observations, walks, and shared experiences across the city. We collaborated with public officials and institutional partners on the preparation of a project focused on greening specific places in the city and spent several days exploring Tétouan together with architecture students, residents, and temporary visitors.

As a team, we gathered an incredible wealth of insights into where the city’s unique potential lies and how, together with the people of Tétouan, we can strengthen and activate the power of this place: beautiful, generous, diverse, deeply authentic, Mediterranean, welcoming, supportive, and so much more.

This is only the first step, but thanks to the dedication, openness, and energy of everyone involved, we already feel the enormous potential ahead. Much of the work I focus on like women in public space, the activation and valorisation of rooftops for all, and regenerative tourism, is clearly part of this potential.
